P113: Analysis of ancient art: Chemistry in a museum

Daphne Norton (Emory University, USA)

Chemistry majors at Emory University have the opportunity to explore instrumental methods and techniques applied in the field of conservation.    Specifically, a new laboratory course, Analysis of Ancient Art, was developed with funding from the Mellon Foundation. This course takes an interdisciplinary approach and is a collaborative effort between the Emory Chemistry Department and the Michael C. Carlos Museum.  The course includes a series of case studies connected to specific objects in the museum’s collection.  Laboratory components for each case were developed based on the experience provided during the Advanced Art Workshop at Villanova University sponsored by the Center for Workshops in the Chemical Sciences.   This presentation will discuss the structure of the course and the individual objects used in analysis.
