P116: Technical art historical investigations at the Indianapolis Museum of Art

Jeffrey Fieberg (Centre College, USA)

During fall 2011, the lead author participated as the first Sabbatical Leave Research Fellow in Technical Art History at the Indianapolis Museum of Art (IMA).  Working in the Conservation Science Laboratory, technical analyses of paintings (Mysterious Departure by De Chirico, Jupiter, by a follower of Jordaens, and the Cincinnati Art Museum’s Undergrowth with Two Figures by van Gogh) were performed using x-ray fluorescence, Raman microspectroscopy, and infrared microspectroscopy.  These art historical projects have led to scholarly manuscripts and have been transformed into curricular materials for use in a study abroad course in France, 2013.  This introductory experience in conservation science also provided a deeper understanding of daily operations at museums, including the roles of conservation and curatorial staff.  Ultimately, Centre College students will benefit from this ability to discuss museum life and analyses of paintings from first-hand experience.
