P122: Measuring the effect of informal chemistry education experiences for children

Jessica Reed (Iowa State University, USA), Mary ODonnell (Miami University, USA), Christopher Bauer (Univ. of New Hampshire, USA), Thomas Holme (ACS Examinations Institute, USA)

This project seeks to measure elementary and middle school students’ attitudes toward chemistry using a modified version of Bauer’s Attitude toward the Subject of Chemistry Inventory (ASCI) with the intent of assessing outreach activities. The instrument used is in the form of a semantic differential where students position themselves on a five-point scale between two polar words or descriptors, in reference to how they feel about “chemistry.” There are six item pairs on the survey, which measure utility, efficacy, anxiety, intellectual accessibility, emotional satisfaction, and clarity. Results have shown positive and negative gains on pre/post measures overall, by grade level, and gender.
