P149: Designing general chemistry lecture videos

Robert Richman (retired, USA)

Although many students prefer to learn from traditional lectures, extensive research shows that lectures are less effective than active learning methods and hence should be used sparingly.  But some new research suggests that lectures are as effective as other methods when the learner has the opportunity to replay them at will.  Video lectures offer this opportunity.  But recordings of classroom presentations fail to exploit the advantages offered by the medium of video.  Compared to classroom presentations, video lectures should accommodate shorter attention spans and be faster paced, rich with images, and linked to other content, both text and video, that reviews background material and expands on the topic.  Pilot videos (http://robertrichman.webstarts.com/teaching_videos.html) intended for a General Chemistry etextbook or online course will be presented.
