P232: From concept to reality: Guided-inquiry experiences in organic chemistry

David Forbes (University of South Alabama, USA)

Seven years ago Drs. Mohrig, Hammond, and Kim led a CWCS workshop on teaching guided-inquiry organic chemistry labs.  One central component of that experience was a departure from cook-book experiences.  Since that workshop, myself and members of the Department of Chemistry at the University of South Alabama have integrated into our curriculum guided-inquiry experiences in the instructional labs.  Our premise being that education begins with the curiosity of the learner.  Having as part of the laboratory experience and as the capstone experience of the course a laboratory practicum, students have the opportunity to develop the skills set of asking questions, exploring solutions, discussing and then reflecting on the new-found knowledge.  This approach has been successfully incorporated into our curriculum and was a key modification to the 5th edition of the laboratory textbook Microscale Organic Laboratory with Multistep and Multiscale Syntheses.  This presentation will highlight our migration from concept to reality.
