P238: Spectrum of student understanding on structure-property relationships

Leah Corley (Clemson University, USA), Sonia Underwood (Clemson University, USA), Melanie Cooper (Clemson University, USA)

A key skill in learning chemistry is developing the ability to connect a compound’s structure to its properties. Prior research, however, shows that many students fail to make these structure-property connections and are, therefore, unable to determine the information encoded in chemical structures. In an attempt to explore this disconnect, semi-structured interviews were conducted with both general chemistry and organic chemistry students to determine their understanding of structure-property relationships for various compounds. These interviews resulted in a spectrum of student ideas on the topic, each unique and independent of the rest. Results from these interviews will be discussed along with future research directions.
