P240: How do students' understandings of acids and bases change as they progress from general to organic chemistry?: A preliminary report

Sarah Wood, Dannica Brennan, Eshani Gandhi, MaryKay Orgill (University of Nevada – Las Vegas, USA)

While student success in organic chemistry courses is influenced by a number of factors, experts often correlate the ability to master organic chemistry with an individual’s ability to comprehend and use mechanisms. The ability to comprehend and use mechanisms is, in turn, affected by students’ comprehension of basic concepts taught in general chemistry courses, like acids and bases. We are currently examining how students’ understandings of acids and bases change as they progress from general to organic chemistry, with the ultimate goal of determining how these understandings affect students’ comprehension and use of organic mechanisms. Preliminary results will be discussed.
