P245: Thermodynamics in a Physics for Filmmakers course

Luis Nasser (Columbia College – Chicago, USA)

In our Physics for Filmmakers course at Columbia College Chicago, we use Hollywood movies to spark discussion of both good and bad physics in films.  Most of our examples are from mechanics, but we cover several topics in the overlap between physics and chemistry.  These include density (as depicted in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Matrix: Revolutions) and the behavior of gases (as shown in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and The Day After Tomorrow).  We will show sample clips and discuss how we use the clips with our population of (mostly) film and video majors.
