P444: Impacts of cultural capital and motivation on problem-solving performance in undergraduate organic chemistry - WITHDRAWN

Nathan Barrows (Grand Valley State University, USA)

As few large studies of student performance in organic chemistry appear in the chemical education literature, many instructors rely on “conventional wisdom” when interpreting the results of their assessments. Outside of a relatively few studies on specific topics (e.g. mental rotation, misconceptions) conducted with small groups of students, the learning ecosystem in organic chemistry is relatively unknown. This presentation will report on a large study that examined the patterns in student performance in undergraduate organic chemistry through the lenses of cultural capital and motivation. Preliminary results suggest that current measures of cultural capital may not be applicable to students enrolled in organic chemistry.
