P54: At what educational level is the use of inquiry teaching methods most appropriate?

This presentation describes the outcomes of a two year study of three educational levels of laboratory teaching: middle school, high school, and university. In each setting, inquiry laboratory exercises were introduced, and the results were compared to teaching the same laboratory exercises with more traditional expository methods. Bloom’s taxonomy was used to determine if inquiry activities promoted higher order thinking skills, as often is reported in the literature. Results indicate that older students believe they made greater gains in skill development and value inquiry more than younger students In terms of higher order thinking skills, students of all age levels were able to improve or maintain their higher order thinking skills.
