Session S10 (Sunday, 2pm, Thomas 117)

P59: ROCK: Connecting university students to the community

Edward Zovinka (Saint Francis University, USA)

The Saint Francis University Rural Outreach Chemistry for Kids (R.O.C.K.) program involves Saint Francis University science students in the local community through hands-on science activities. The program has grown from 6 events during the 1995-1996 academic year to coordinating 157 events, involving 4006 youth from grades K-12 during 2010-2011 academic year. By using trained student leaders, we focus the program on the student, whether it is a university or K-12 student. While the SFU chemistry faculty provide the continuity in the program, each student ROCK director or ROCK leadership team sets the tone and level of activity each academic year. Upon invitation, ROCK visits are scheduled with the teachers and coordinated by the student leaders. During a ROCK visit, SFU students lead the events, working in small groups where there is more opportunity for personal interaction. During the session, the development and operation of the SFU ROCK program will be presented.
