P78: Toward high school biology: Evaluating student understanding

Cari Herrmann Abell (American Association for the Advancement of Science, USA), Jean Flanagan (American Association for the Advancement of Science, USA), Jo Ellen Roseman (American Association for the Advancement of Science, USA)

One component of the intervention’s evaluation addresses students’ understanding. Students’ understanding of the unit learning goals are examined through classroom observations, analyses of students’ written class and homework, pre and postests, and one-on-one interviews.  Because the curriculum unit challenges common student ideas that appear in the research literature around chemical reactions in non-living and living systems, the assessments measure students’ progress toward more scientifically accurate understandings.  We will present results from measures of student understanding and will also describe how we have used these measures of student understanding to inform iterative revisions of the curriculum.
