P823: Psychometric evaluation of the Chemistry Concepts Inventory

Jack Barbera, (University of Northern Colorado, USA)

Since its publication in 2002, the Chemistry Concepts Inventory (CCI) has been used in a variety of studies within the chemistry education community to assess student conceptions of a variety of general chemistry related concepts. While several studies have used the entire instrument or subsets of its items, little published data exists regarding the instrument’s functionality. To date, the only published psychometric data for the instrument is the internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha value) reported by the instrument developers. This project began as an evaluation of the instrument prior to its use in a research study. The evaluation uses both Classical Test Theory and Item Response Theory methods on large (n>2500) data sets to gauge a variety of psychometric properties for both pre- and post-instruction use of the CCI. Data will be presented to support the validity and reliability of results at the item and instrument level.
