S24a: Introducing Climate Change Science: A Path to Sustainability

Organizers: Lallie McKenzie (Chem11, LLC, USA), Ashley Versprille (Purdue University, USA), Marcy Towns (Purdue University, USA), Mary Kirchhoff (American Chemical Society, USA), Peter Mahaffy (The King’s University College, Canada)

Presider: Lallie McKenzie (Chem11, LLC, USA)

Colleges and universities play an important role in educating learners about global climate change. Challenges that will be met by the current generation of students include developing new energy sources, mitigating the effects of climate change, and altering our energy consumption habits. At the same time, undergraduate biology, chemistry and physics curricula have been reticent to address this defining and interdisciplinary global challenge. This symposium will highlight the connections between climate change science and chemistry education and showcase new tools, resources, and pedagogical strategies that are enhancing climate change literacy and understanding of core chemistry concepts.
