S32: Fostering Excellence in Chemistry Education at Two-Year Colleges

Organizers: John Clevenger (Chair, Task Force on Two-Year College Activities, Truckee Meadows Community College (retired), USA), Joan Sabourin (American Chemical Society, USA)

Presider: John  Clevenger (Truckee Meadows C. C. (retired), USA)

Efforts to broaden participation in the chemistry enterprise should include two-year colleges, which serve a diverse range of students, fields, and community needs. According to the NSF, approximately 40% of chemistry bachelor’s and master’s degrees (and 60% of all science, engineering, and health bachelor’s and master’s degrees) are awarded to students who have attended a two-year college. Two-year colleges play a key role in preparation for, and growth in, careers in chemistry and chemistry-based fields. This symposium will focus on activities designed to foster excellence in chemistry education at two-year colleges. Through presentations and panel discussions, the impact of such resources as the ACS Guidelines for Chemistry in Two-Year College Programs, professional development workshops, and a new self-study tool for two-year programs will be explored. Effective practices from these resources and other activities will be discussed.
