S5b: Enhancing the Chemistry Curriculum with Tested Online Instructional Materials

Organizers: Diane Bunce (Catholic University of America, USA), John Moore (University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA), Linda Fanis-Craft (ChemEd DL, USA)

Presider: Diane Bunce (Catholic University of America, USA)

This symposium will showcase curriculum innovations carried out during the 2011-2012 academic year together with results of evaluation studies of those innovations. Presenters are professors from two-year and four-year colleges around the country who participated in the ChemEd DL/ChemEd Research Summit conference held July 11-15, 2011. At the conference they selected online resources from the Chemical Education Digital Library (ChemEd DL), combined these into online instructional units, and planned how to use those units during the academic year. They also wrote research questions and developed methodologies for investigating how their units affected student learning and carried out the research in their classes. Instructional units were created for organic chemistry and general chemistry courses for integration into the presenters’ lectures, laboratories, and POGIL curriculum. Specific topics presented in the symposium may include stereochemistry, nomenclature, molecular polarity, molecular structure, intermolecular forces, dimensional analysis and real world applications of chemistry.
