S76: Introduction of Macromolecular Science/Polymeric Materials into the Foundational Course in Organic Chemistry

Organizer: Bob Howell (Central Michigan University, USA)

Presider: Bob Howell (Central Michigan University, USA)

The current guidelines for undergraduate training in chemistry provided by the ACS Committee on Professional Training contains the assertion that “students should be exposed to the principles of macromolecules across foundational areas”. This is particularly important for the foundational course in organic chemistry. Incorporation of macromolecular science/polymeric materials into the beginning organic course can be done in a variety of ways. The focus of the symposium will be descriptions of how this is being done/has been done by practioners, i.e., instructors of the first organic chemistry course. This kind of information should be very helpful to those only now beginning to include a more meaningful treatment of polymers in the organic sequence. It is anticipated that symposium presentations will lead to a series of articles to appear in the Journal of Chemical Education.
