S81: Visualization Research in Chemistry Education

Organizer: Maria Oliver-Hoyo (North Carolina State University, USA)

Presider: Maria Oliver-Hoyo (North Carolina State University, USA)

This symposium will present research-based approaches to promote visualization in chemistry instruction. Starting with the spatial nature of molecules, we understand that in chemistry visual-spatial skills are essential to the discipline. However, often these skills are overlooked in chemistry classrooms or even taken for granted. The emphasis on all presentations will be on visualization research aspects that ultimately seek to enhance visual-spatial skills in students. Topics of interest include; well-designed interventions and resources used, monitoring students’ visual-skills development, the role of modeling in the development of visualization tools, non-standard aspects of visualizing chemical phenomena, visualization as a path to achieve cognitive gains, and visualization as a means to extract significance from chemical data.
